Yet Gideon’s very name alerts the Hebrew reader to expect something of him: it means “Chopper” or “Hacker”. Our sullen young hero quibbles over the greeting—how can we be in such a mess if the Lord is with us? How often do we object to being greeted with a “good morning”? In another typical move, young Chopper distances himself from his fathers’ religion. The Lord’s reputation is bound up with the story of the deliverance from Egypt. Gideon at least knows the story of the past (contrast 2:10).
